The Folias Tango Quartet performs original tango arrangements and compositions rooted in the golden era of tango music. They have performed across the United States for milongas touring with a variety of tango ensembles and teaching tango musicality classes. Band leaders Carmen Maret and Andrew Bergeron have performed tango music for milongas since 2003 and are also dance instructors and founders of the Grand Rapids Tango Community which they formed in 2005.
Carmen Maret began dancing tango and performing tango with the Kansas City, MO based group, Tango Lorca in 2001. Later, she studied tango as an ethnomusicology Master’s student at Michigan State University, and produced a Master’s thesis in 2005 that looked at tango in the Michigan Argentine Tango club based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Carmen Maret is a co-founder of the Grand Rapids Tango Community where she works as a tango teacher and tango musician. Carmen Maret’s main pedagogical influences as a dancer include Tom Stermitz, Brigitta Winkler, and Christopher Nassopoulos & Caroline Peattie.
Andrew Bergeron has taught tango in the Grand Rapids tango community since co-founding it in 2005. His classes focus on finding an ease and flow in Argentine tango through a deep connection to the music. Andrew Bergeron splits his musical efforts between composition and performance, specializing in tango arranging. During his Master’s degree in composition at Michigan State University, Andrew Bergeron composed music for a variety of ensembles including, solo guitar, guitar and flute, electro-acoustic music, chamber music, and tango.
Avik Basu began his tango journey in 2002 and since then has danced, DJ'd, and performed all over North America. Because he sees tango as a way to discover and improve oneself, he is devoted to sharing it with others. His instruction over the better part of the last decade has been instrumental in developing the Ann Arbor tango community.
Avik specializes in teaching social tango emphasizing connection, musicality, and improvisation. He has come to be known for his clear explanations which expose the core of any tango idea whether it be about movement or musicality. In addition to his regular classes in Ann Arbor, he has taught all over North America and beyond. Some of the more interesting tango adventures he's been on include two month-long immersions in Buenos Aires, DJing Monday night at Salon Canning, teaching tango to a Bollywood actress in Mumbai, India, and touring the U.S. with tango band Trio Folias. Through it all, he continues to have a vivid memory of what it was like to start learning this challenging dance and this aids his teaching in a profound way.
An eternal tango student, Avik has taken classes from dancers in many tango traditions. The teachers who have left their mark most clearly are Gustavo Naveira, Susana Miller, Alex Krebs, and Robin Thomas. And in great measure, he has been guided by his experiences with his many talented students.
